There are no Barker arrays having more than two dimensions

Davis, Jedwab and Smith recently proved that there are no 2-dimensional Barker arrays except of size 2×2. We show that the existence of a (d+1)-dimensional Barker array implies the existence of a d-dimensional Barker array with the same number of ±1 elements. We deduce that there are no Barker arrays having more than two dimensions, as conjectured by Dymond in 1992.

There Are More Valence Alternations than the Ditransitive

Recent research has witnessed a growing interest in determining how much usage frequency explains language patterns and language processing (Bybee, 2006; Pierrehumbert, 2001; Jurafsky, 2002). This paper focuses on the degree to which the relative frequency of verbs in syntactic frames (or valence alternations) may explain the acquisition of these frames (or these alternations). Valence alternat...

Two Languages Are More Informative Than One

This paper presents a new approach for resolving lexical ambiguities in one language using statistical data on lexical relations in another language. This approach exploits the differences between mappings of words to senses in different languages. We concentrate on the problem of target word selection in machine translation, for which the approach is directly applicable, and employ a statistic...

Everyone understands that th...

Are There More Than Minimal A Priori Constraints on Irrationality?

Our concern in this paper is with the question of how irrational an intentional agent can be, and, in particular, with an argument Stephen Stich has given for the claim that there are only very minimal a priori requirements on the rationality of intentional agents. The argument appears in chapter 2 of The Fragmentation of Reason. 1 Stich is concerned there with the prospects for the 'reform-min...
